I've been absorbing a lot of information recently and its sent my mind on a trip...I am currently reading 'Long Walk To Freedom' by Nelson Mandela. It's a very emotional, eye opening and thought-provoking book. Be weary of where you read it because you will tear up. That's the main read for the moment but in and amongst that, I've been sticking my head into newspaper articles, blogposts, and YouTube videos that have been opening my mind up to the possibilities of the world and my life. Today I really just want to share an article by Maria Popova, the mind behind BrainPickings.org. I don't really want to go too deep into what was discussed, as I feel you should read it for yourself. The article titled 'Fixed vs. Growth: The Two Basic Mindsets That Shape Our Lives' talks about Carol Dwecks book 'Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.'
The terms growth and fixed mindset were devised by Dweck. In short the fixed mindset is "believing that your qualities are carved in stone" and the growth mindset is "belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through efforts". She explores these mindsets in the behaviour and attitude of children towards "failure" and "success," identifying which mindset the children fall into and how that affects their outlook on life. She also goes on to explain how these mindsets shape how we interact with loved ones and if we take time to look into ourselves, we'll be able to find the "why" in our behavioural patterns when looking through the lens of these mindsets.
I think I've babbled on enough now. I urge you all to read more and in particular this article... And friends, look at your life and see where you sit and be honest with yourself, because in the end that'll help YOU excel in life and that's a major key.
Heres the link to the article and I hope you find it as transformative as I did: Fixed vs. Growth: The Two Basic Mindsets That Shape Our Lives
